AV Over IP Distribution Meets Video Wall Processing

For most of the decade the AV-over-IP argument was phrased as a replacement: endpoints would absorb the matrix, and eventually everything else. The announcement from Visionary Solutions and tvONE on 21 October phrases it differently. The two companies have completed engineering tests that connect Visionary's 5 Series PacketAV Matrix endpoints to tvONE's CALICO PRO processors, so that decoders deliver HDMI into the processor's inputs, CALICO PRO arranges those sources across a video wall, and the processor's outputs feed Visionary encoders for distribution back across the network. Testing covered resolutions, frame rates, EDID handling and image quality across the evaluated configurations, including 4K transport over a gigabit network.

What the partnership actually validates is a division of labour that good projects have been drawing on paper for years. The network layer moves packets from wherever a source physically lives to wherever the processing happens; the processing layer decides how many windows sit on a wall, how they are scaled, layered, bordered and rotated; the network layer then carries the result to displays and desks that were never near the processor. Neither layer is obsolete, and pretending one replaces the other has produced some expensive installations. A processor with eight HDMI inputs sits at the end of eight cable runs; a decoder bank sits wherever the network already reaches. The interesting design question is the seam between them, and that seam is exactly what a validated interoperability matrix is for.

The procurement lesson is bigger than either brand. When a tender mixes products from three or four manufacturers - one vendor's encoders, another's wall processor, a third's control system - the integrator is implicitly signing up to be the interoperability laboratory. Resolution support, EDID behaviour across a sleep-wake cycle, frame-rate conversion, HDCP authorisation and latency budgets all live at the seam, and a failure there is everybody's fault and therefore nobody's. The questions that separate a clean project from a dispute are simple to write down: which combinations have been tested and at what firmware versions, who re-tests after either side ships an update, and what the documented fallback is when a seam misbehaves on site.

Amtune designs for exactly that seam discipline. A seamless hybrid matrix with multiview processing keeps routing and wall layout in one validated envelope for rooms that want a single point of accountability, while AV over IP decoders extend sources to displays the matrix cannot reach with copper; where a project pairs Amtune endpoints with a third-party processor, the multi-viewer and converter lines close the resolution, format and EDID gaps that interop testing reveals. Everything is built under ISO 9001 with CE, FCC and RoHS compliance. Integration enquiries at sales@amtune.com.
