Dante Host Puts Paging And Zoning Into Software

Ecler used the week of 19 October to introduce VIVO-X0D32, the first Dante-native host in its VIVO family, and the product quietly redraws where paging logic lives. In one rack unit it offers 32 by 32 Dante and AES67 audio ports arranged as sixteen transmit and sixteen receive flows, two Ethernet ports so that control traffic and Dante traffic can be separated, a small colour display for local status, native cloud monitoring and auto-update, and an embedded web application that runs a workspace of events, calendars, presets and scripting automation. Four internal audio players read from a microSD card of up to two terabytes, two audio generators are included for test and signalling tones, the host can serve user control panels to non-technical staff, and a single BIO-X8 or BIO-X8G expansion over the proprietary link takes analogue I/O to 40 by 40 with general-purpose inputs and outputs attached.

The companion firmware release is where the argument becomes concrete. EclerPLEX version 1.05 adds support for the PAGE-X4 and PAGE-X10D paging stations, which ship in November, along with a template that builds a complete paging panel in a single step, an option to clear zones automatically after each call, and a simplified pager and ducker design in which zones are selected directly on the routing canvas. The stations themselves are Power over Ethernet touch consoles with a single Dante and AES67 connection carrying two flows, one microphone and one line input, and selectable latency of one, two or five milliseconds. Ten years ago that function was a dedicated desk microphone wired into a paging matrix with eight zone buttons and a bundle of analogue connections to the amplifier rack. Now the zone map is a software object, and the number of zones is limited by flow counts and amplifier channels rather than by how many buttons were bought.

Three engineering consequences follow. The first is flow accounting: thirty-two channels packed into sixteen transmit flows means channel grouping has to be planned, and every paging station consumes flows of its own, so an all-call multicast and a single-zone unicast are different design decisions rather than different buttons. The second is commissioning safety, which the release notes address almost in passing: unavailable ports are now flagged in orange, the software asks for confirmation before clearing the matrix, and preset loads are logged. In a building where a wrong preset can silence a concourse during an evacuation drill, an audit trail is worth more than another feature. The third is scope discipline. Music, announcements, ducking and scheduled messages belong on this host; life-safety voice alarm belongs on its own certified path with its own supervision, and the two should share loudspeakers and cabling only where the standard explicitly allows it.

Amtune supplies the audio networking silicon and interfaces behind products of this shape. Our Dante and AES67 audio interfaces provide the network audio front end, modular Dante audio I/O lets a manufacturer size channel counts per model, and AES67 audio modules cover the mixed-vendor installations where a proprietary control plane is not acceptable. When a host has to serve paging consoles, background music and a matrix in one box, the module choice determines the flow budget before the software is written. OEM enquiries at sales@amtune.com.
