A 600-capacity club runs at least three businesses in one room: a touring band on Friday, a comedian on Saturday, a corporate hire on Monday. The AV has to be re-configured between them in an afternoon, by a house engineer who did not design it and a guest engineer who has never seen it. That constraint, not channel count, is what shapes the signal chain, and it is why clubs that buy on specification sheets alone end up with a rack nobody can operate at 7pm on a show night.
Video is IMAG first. Two or three cameras, a screen beside the stage or a small LED backdrop, and a latency budget that has to stay inside about one frame or the picture and the performer's mouth disagree in a way the audience feels before it can name it. That rules out anything with a deep frame buffer in the path. Playback sources need their HDCP position decided in advance, because tour content arrives copy-protected and a matrix that strips it simply goes black. Amtune's HDMI hybrid matrices and multi-viewers keep IMAG, playback and the lobby screen on separate outputs with EDID locked per sink.
Audio splits three ways: front of house, monitors, and whatever is being recorded or streamed. On a Dante network those are subscriptions rather than copper splits, which is what makes a guest console practical - the visiting engineer patches into the house network, takes a copy of the stage inputs, and leaves the house console untouched. The clock has to be unambiguous and the sample rate consistent, or the first soundcheck is spent chasing clicks. Where the club also streams, the broadcast mix gets its own path and its own limiter, because a mix that sounds right in the room is rarely the mix that survives a phone speaker.
Then the unglamorous parts that decide whether the room opens on time: a house preset that restores routing after a power cut, UPS on the control positions rather than on the stage, labelled tie-lines to the bar and the dressing rooms, and spares for the two items that fail - a transmitter and a cable. Dante audio modules and HDBaseT extenders let the rack live in the office instead of at the side of the stage, which is also where it can be monitored, and presentation switches cover the corporate hire days when the room is asked to behave like a meeting space.
