Amtune AV Distribution For Airports And Transport Hubs

A transport hub is the least forgiving environment in commercial AV. A mid-size airport terminal carries flight information displays, gate screens, baggage hall monitors, wayfinding totems, retail signage, a public address system and a security operations wall, all running continuously, all in public view, and all expected to work through a decade of refits. Nobody closes a terminal to re-terminate a cable. That single constraint shapes every decision that follows.

The distribution layer usually decides the outcome. Point-to-point HDMI stops being practical somewhere around the fourth display group, both because of distance and because every home run is a new cable path in a building that will not allow one. Two architectures survive contact with an airport: a head-end matrix feeding zones over category cable where runs are under roughly a hundred metres, and AV-over-IP multicast where the site already has a fibre backbone and a network team willing to allocate a VLAN and manage IGMP. Most large sites end up with both, using IP between buildings and extenders within a hall, with the boundary chosen by cable route rather than by product preference.

Reliability is a specification, not a hope. Displays must come back to a known state after a power event, which means the matrix or decoder restores the last routing without a human, and the source list is fixed rather than discovered. EDID needs to be locked per input so a swapped screen in a retail unit cannot force the whole head-end to renegotiate to 1080p. Audio for paging belongs on the network as Dante or AES67, in zones that match the life-safety and operations zoning, so a gate change announcement reaches the right pier without re-patching amplifiers. And the operations team needs a status view: which decoders are online, which displays are dark, which streams are missing. In a 24/7 site that view is worth more than any single feature on a datasheet.

Then there is the practical matter of what to keep in the rack. Standardise on one matrix platform and one extender family so spares cover the whole site, keep a pre-configured spare decoder and transmitter on the shelf, and document every route in a form that a shift technician can follow at three in the morning. Where the terminal is listed or heritage-protected, wireless links and surface trunking may be the only permitted options, which pushes design toward existing cable reuse and Power-over-HDBaseT so no local mains supply is needed behind a display. Amtune builds hardware for exactly this duty: seamless hybrid matrices for head-end routing, HD video multi-viewers for operations walls, HDBaseT extenders for hall-level distribution, AV switches for local source selection, AV-over-IP decoders for building-to-building links and Dante and AES67 interfaces for paging and announcements. Every unit is manufactured under an ISO 9001 quality system and tested to CE, FCC and RoHS. Consultation and drawings at sales@amtune.com.
