USB-C Reach Becomes the Room Design Constraint

Lightware added two products on 28 October that attack the same problem from opposite ends. The Taurus SCX-2x1-HC60 is a standalone 2x1 matrix switcher built on the Taurus HC60 platform but able to run without Lightware's LARA room automation; it carries video, USB, audio, network and up to 100W of charging on a single USB-C connection, switches hosts automatically over USB-C or HDMI plus USB, handles 4K60 4:4:4 and 5K (5120x2160) over HDMI 2.0, moves USB 3 at 5Gbps, and exposes SNMPv3 and Syslog to the IT team. The USBC-Booster is an inline regenerator for the cable run itself.

The booster exists because passive USB-C copper is a short-reach medium behaving like a long one. DisplayPort 1.2a alternate mode provides four lanes; 4K60 4:4:4 at eight bits uses all four, leaving USB 2.0 for peripherals. Put the booster into two-lane mode and USB 3.2 at 5Gbps returns, but video now has half the lanes and falls back to a lower rate. Nothing is added; lanes are reallocated. That is a per-room decision and it belongs on the drawing, because the failure mode surfaces months later as a dock that manages 4K30 but not 4K60, or a camera that enumerates on one side of the room and not the other.

The reach numbers are the practical part: 12m on passive cables, 14m when combined with active optical USB-C, 100W of Power Delivery to the host and 15W to peripherals, fanless, with an internal IEC C14 supply so there is no brick under the table or behind the screen, and C-Lock brackets to stop the connector walking out mid-session. Local power matters because the unit has to hold the PD contract and re-establish the link, not merely equalise a signal. DisplayLink MST support covers the software-driven multi-display case that hardware MST cannot reach.

Read together, the two products describe the constraint that now sets room design. Distance from table to display, the number of USB 3 peripherals that must enumerate at the far end, whether a laptop has to charge at full rate, and whether the switch needs an IP address are the questions that decide the topology - not resolution. A room that answers them at design time needs one switcher and one cable; a room that discovers them at commissioning needs a site visit and a purchase order. Amtune builds the HDMI side of that chain: seamless hybrid matrices for multi-source rooms, HDBaseT extenders for the last leg to the display, and signal converters where legacy sources have to join.
