AV Distribution Consolidates As Ownership Changes Hands

October produced two ownership changes that matter more to project delivery than to the trade press. TD SYNNEX entered a definitive agreement to acquire BlueStar, a specialty distributor known for digital signage, data capture and security technologies. In the same fortnight, One Equity Partners began the process of buying Nexora, the parent of Almo Pro AV, with the transition expected to complete by March 2027. Nexora reports more than USD 3 billion in annual revenue, over 30,000 partners across more than 60 countries and roughly 2,000 specialist staff, trading as Almo, Azenn Connect, CapTech, COMM-TEC, Hammer and JAM.

The logic is not mysterious. Distribution margins are thin, logistics is expensive, and a specialist distributor's real asset is the technical bench that can answer a consultant's question about EDID behaviour the night before a commissioning. Consolidation buys that bench and the customer relationships around it, then spreads the fixed cost over a larger catalogue. Dan Smith, executive vice president at Almo Pro AV, framed the move as acceleration rather than a change of direction and pointed to a rebuilt website plus improved bid registration and freight tools. That is a fair summary of where distributor competition now sits: not on catalogue breadth, but on how quickly a quote, a stock position and a technical answer arrive.

For a hardware manufacturer the practical consequences show up first in the price file. Fewer buying desks means fewer chances to be listed, and one product data sheet now has to satisfy several regional catalogue teams at once. Where an OEM previously supported five distributors with five SKU variants, a consolidated buyer will ask why there are five. The manufacturers who hold their position tend to be the ones that can supply structured data - dimensions, power draw, thermal figures, compliance documents, firmware release notes and end-of-life dates - in a single format, and quote a lead time they can actually meet rather than the one that wins the meeting.

For integrators the risk is quieter: local stock depth. A regional warehouse that carried a spare HDBaseT receiver for same-week replacement can become a line item in a national inventory plan, and the distance between the two is measured in programme days. Projects in the Gulf, Southeast Asia and Latin America, where a replacement part can cost a week on site, should be specified with an explicit spares list, a documented substitution path and a stated acceptable downtime - not an assumption of overnight availability. Distribution consolidation is a balance-sheet story until the afternoon a receiver fails in a rack nobody can reach. Hardware that arrives with complete documentation, a stable firmware branch and an honest lead time is also easier to keep on a consolidated price file, which is the case Amtune makes for its seamless hybrid matrix range, signal converters and HDBaseT extenders.
