SMPTE ST 2110 and IPMX answered the question of how professional media travels over a network. The question that has occupied engineers through 2026 is a different one: how do all those devices find each other and connect? That gap is being filled by NMOS, the Networked Media Open Specifications, which function as the control layer of an IP media infrastructure. Two parts do most of the work. IS-04 handles discovery and registration, so a device announces itself and is found by the system automatically, in the way an automated telephone directory would. IS-05 handles device connection management, establishing and tearing down the streams between a sender and a receiver. Together they turn a rack of unrelated boxes into something that behaves like the broadcast matrix operators already understand.
The practical evidence is showing up in products rather than in standards meetings. A new software multiviewer running on ordinary PC hardware now supports both IPMX and SMPTE ST 2110 sources, which removes the need for a dedicated proprietary multiviewer appliance and turns monitoring into a software licence. A 25 gigabit IPMX and ST 2110 transceiver with native 12G-SDI connectivity can carry uncompressed media or JPEG XS for bandwidth-optimised workflows on the same link. New 1RU server platforms with redundant power and multiple expansion slots are being positioned as a common hardware base for gateways, capture, monitoring and transcoding. And broadcast audio platforms are arriving with NMOS-native operation built in, rather than added later.
Why should pro AV integrators care about a broadcast specification? Because the same architecture is arriving in their projects. When endpoints are software running on standard computers and servers, the cost of an IP media node falls and the number of nodes a facility can afford rises. When discovery and registration are standardised, a mixed-vendor system documents itself, and control, tally and monitoring can be unified rather than rebuilt per device. What does not change is the network discipline underneath: precision timing, multicast and IGMP configuration, and sensible VLAN separation remain the difference between a demonstration and a system that survives contact with operations.
NMOS does not remove the need for hardware that behaves predictably at the screen. In a control room, a divisible room or a lobby wall, a purpose-built matrix still guarantees zero-gap switching and a fixed latency budget that a shared network cannot promise. The workable pattern is hybrid: route the deterministic layer through HD video seamless hybrid matrices and AV switchers, feed the networked tier through AV-over-IP codecs and decoders, and give operators their overview with HD video multi-viewers and multiview processors. Amtune manufactures that hardware under an ISO 9001 quality system, tested to CE, FCC and RoHS standards, and supports integrators at sales@amtune.com.
