Amtune Signal Chains for Theatres and Opera Houses

A producing theatre runs six to eight performances a week, mounts a new production every few weeks, and gets a changeover window measured in hours. The AV system therefore has an unusual requirement: it must be reconfigurable by stage crew at two in the morning, without an integrator, without a laptop full of undocumented software, and without the possibility of taking the show down. Repatching is acceptable; rebuilding is not. That constraint shapes every decision more than resolution or brightness does.

On the video side, the first principle is that surtitles are not stage picture. They have a different aspect ratio, a different acceptable latency, a different failure consequence and often a different operator. Running titles through the same seamless matrix as the stage image means a stage crossfade can disturb a line of dialogue that is being read in translation. Amtune keeps the title path independent - its own source, its own scaler, its own output to the title surface - and joins the two only at the show-control layer, so a cue advances both without either depending on the other's routing. Stage projection across front, cyc and side surfaces then works as a canvas problem: per-output geometry, locked EDID at each projector, and frame sync where cameras or IMAG are in the same production.

Audio follows the same logic in Dante or AES67. Playback, foldback, backstage relay, dressing-room paging and accessibility feeds are separate streams with their own zones, sharing one clock domain with the front-of-house console but not one matrix. Because a performance cannot pause for a firmware update, the show path is specified with redundancy that operators can actually test during a tech: a second matrix route, a UPS sized to the measured rack load rather than the nameplate, and a documented bypass that keeps title and stage picture alive if the control layer fails. Where a production carries its own console, the venue still owns the clock and the routing boundary, which is the difference between a guest desk and a re-engineered building.

Amtune supplies that spine with seamless hybrid matrices for cue-based switching, converters for legacy and guest sources, HDBaseT extenders for projector runs through heritage buildings where new conduit is impossible, and Dante modular audio for zone routing. Every rack ships with a per-production preset sheet the crew can fill in. Enquiries: sales@amtune.com.
