The most interesting hardware change in AV-over-IP this month is not a new resolution or a new codec. It is the arrival of purpose-built silicon. Crestron has introduced the DM NVX 370 hardware line together with its first in-house system-on-chip, a device designed exclusively for professional AV rather than adapted from a general-purpose processor family. The design targets continuous 24/7 operation and 4K60 4:4:4 video processing with native audio routing, and Crestron puts the resulting power efficiency roughly 30 per cent better than generic alternatives. Just as significant, owning the silicon allows firmware updates to add capabilities over time instead of forcing an endpoint replacement.
Connectivity is the second half of the announcement. The DM NVX 370 series adds a direct USB-C input that carries high-resolution video, USB data for peripherals and up to 100 watts of power delivery over one cable, alongside conventional HDMI inputs. In a conference room that single connector replaces the docking station, the video adapter and much of the table cabling, which matters more than it sounds: every removed adapter is a failure point and a support call. It also means the room endpoint, not the laptop, becomes responsible for charging, switching and peripheral routing.
Why should integrators care about where the silicon came from? Because an AV-over-IP endpoint runs around the clock inside a closed display enclosure or a crowded rack, where power draw turns directly into heat, and heat turns into failures. A 30 per cent efficiency gain compounds across hundreds of endpoints and can change the outcome of a PoE budget, a thermal design or a room’s noise floor. In-house silicon also shortens the interval between a security fix and its deployment. The same direction shows in this month’s industry awards, which rewarded consolidation rather than novelty: a Dante AV Ultra module that embeds the receiver inside a display or projector, and a USB extension system that carries USB 3.2 Gen 1 data alongside 4K120 video over a single CAT5e run of up to 100 metres.
The practical lesson for specifiers is to treat the endpoint as a long-life asset and ask three questions: what is its idle and full-load power, how long will firmware be supported, and what does it accept at the front panel without adapters. Rooms planned that way age far better than ones dimensioned only on port counts. Amtune builds the surrounding layer as a matched family — HD video seamless hybrid matrices for deterministic local switching, AV switchers and AV converters where a small room only needs one handoff, and AV-over-IP codecs and decoders for the networked tier. Every unit is manufactured under an ISO 9001 quality system and tested to CE, FCC and RoHS standards.
