Room Correction Becomes A Software Layer On Any Computer

Room correction used to be a feature you bought with a processor. That framing has quietly broken this year. In June, Dirac renamed its Room Correction Suite for PC and Mac to Dirac Live Processor and folded in its most advanced tier, Active Room Treatment, so a computer sitting in front of a DAC can now run the same correction once reserved for flagship components. The modular licence list tells the story: stereo room correction around 320 euros, multichannel around 460, Bass Control roughly 275 more, and ART another 275, with a fourteen-day trial covering the lot. Marantz's own support documentation now confirms ART is available on every device that supports Dirac Bass Control, which spreads the top tier across receiver price points that would not have seen it two years ago.

What ART actually does explains why it migrated out of hardware. Conventional correction measures the response at a microphone position and applies an inverse filter, channel by channel, mostly in the frequency domain. ART treats the room and every bass-capable speaker as a single MIMO system: below 150 Hz the drivers emit calculated out-of-phase signals in real time to cancel standing-wave resonances, attacking bass decay time rather than just magnitude, while conventional per-impulse correction takes over above the crossover. The bandwidth is deliberately narrow - ART does nothing for midrange or reverberation - but inside that band it does work that speaker placement and passive treatment rarely reach, which is why it commands its own licence.

Two consequences matter for anyone who buys or builds audio equipment. The first is procurement arithmetic: correction is now a software layer that can outlive the hardware it runs on, and a buyer can trial the full stack before committing, which shifts the sales conversation from spec sheets to measured results in the customer's own room. The second is that the measurement chain - a calibrated microphone, multiple positions, honest before-and-after curves - has become the real entry ticket, not the price of the processor. Vendors whose products can accept an external correction stream, rather than burying fixed DSP behind a badge, sit closer to where customers are now looking.

Amtune builds the front end of exactly those systems. Our HiFi DAC and preamp platform hands a clean, bit-accurate output to whatever correction layer the system uses, and our Dante and AES67 audio interfaces move corrected programme between rooms, zones and machines without analogue loss. For OEM customers we design measurement-friendly signal paths with transparent gain structure so a calibration microphone sees what the listener hears.
