When a project needs several sources and several displays, many integrators still start by counting inputs and outputs and picking the next matrix frame size up. It is a familiar, comfortable way to work, and fixed switchers remain the right answer in plenty of rooms. But as 10G AV-over-IP matures, the decision in 2026 is no longer automatic — and getting it wrong can freeze the size of a system on the day it is ordered.
The core trade-off is scalability versus simplicity. A fixed matrix chassis has a known port count, and every source and display must be homed back to that one rack, so the room layout follows the rack rather than the building. Adding a display, a second video wall or a new workstation means running out of ports or swapping the frame. AV-over-IP removes that ceiling: each source gets an encoder and each display a decoder, any encoder can be routed to any decoder, and expanding the system means adding a box and a switch port rather than replacing hardware. Endpoints only need to reach the nearest switch, so cable runs follow the architecture of the building.
The long-standing objection — that IP adds latency and softens the picture — is really an objection to compression. A codec must buffer frames to compress them, which introduces delay and can leave artifacts. Uncompressed AV-over-IP skips the codec entirely, so the picture leaves the decoder exactly as it entered the encoder, with zero-frame latency operating modes that feel indistinguishable from a matrix to the operator. The price is bandwidth: uncompressed 4K@60Hz 4:4:4 needs a managed 10G network with IGMP snooping and multicast support, not a standard office switch, so the network must be planned deliberately. The same architecture also unlocks features a fixed chassis cannot match — video walls of dozens of displays, multi-view windows, KVM extension, and bidirectional IR, RS-232 and CEC routing.
In practice many of the best installations are hybrid. Amtune's HD video seamless hybrid matrix combines HDMI, DVI, SDI, HDBaseT and fibre connectivity in a single seamless-switching platform, with 8x8, 16x16 and 32x32 configurations and glitch-free switching suited to control rooms, command centres and large-format multi-screen venues. Paired with Amtune AV extenders and AVoIP codecs, it lets designers mix copper, optical and IP links to match the physical realities of a building rather than forcing the building to match a single box. For integrators, the guiding question in 2026 is no longer "matrix or IP" but "which mix of matrix, HDBaseT and IP gives this site the right balance of latency, reach and headroom."
