For most of the last decade AV-over-IP meant choosing a camp: NDI, SDVoE or a vendor's own proprietary stack. In 2026 that is changing. IPMX — the Internet Protocol Media Experience — is consolidating the professional AV and broadcast worlds onto a single, open set of standards, and it is already shipping in silicon rather than sitting on a white paper. IPMX wraps SMPTE ST 2110 media transport with NMOS for device discovery, registration and control, which means it delivers broadcast-grade video without locking an installation to one manufacturer's chipsets or licensing model.
The practical difference is interoperability. Because IPMX builds on standards that enterprise IT departments already understand, an IPMX sender from one brand can be discovered and routed alongside a receiver from another, using commodity 1G or 10G Ethernet switches. At InfoComm 2025 multiple vendors demonstrated IPMX-compliant senders and receivers operating on standard switches, and the IPMX consortium — administered by the Society for Information Display with support from VESA — has published conformance test suites so integrators can verify interoperability before a project is signed off. That is a meaningful departure from earlier AV-over-IP approaches, where compatibility was guaranteed only within a single ecosystem.
Security and management requirements are rising at the same time. Enterprise deployments now expect 802.1X port authentication, TLS-protected control traffic and remote firmware management, and cloud-based dashboards are replacing on-site service visits for diagnostics and updates. The consequence is that manufacturers increasingly compete on IT compliance — network segmentation, firmware governance and device discovery — rather than on resolution alone. Integrators are responding by bringing network engineering skills in-house to handle multicast design and IGMP snooping, which are now as important as cable and connector selection used to be.
Amtune's networked AV range is built for exactly this convergence. The AV over IP codecs and decoders transport high-definition video over standard IP infrastructure, while the Dante / AES67 audio and AES67 modular product families bring synchronised, low-latency audio onto the same network. Combined with the HD video seamless hybrid matrix platform, integrators can assemble a standards-based, interoperable AV-over-IP architecture that scales from a single meeting room to a multi-building campus — without rebuilding the infrastructure each time the system grows. As IPMX and SMPTE ST 2110 move from early adopters to mainstream procurement, the vendors who planned for open standards are the ones positioned to deliver.
