Amtune Maps The HDMI 2.2 Migration For Installed Estates

HDMI 2.2 is a released standard and Ultra96 certified cables are on sale, but almost every room in service is still built on 18Gbps HDMI 2.0b or 48Gbps HDMI 2.1. That gap is not a defect, it is the normal shape of a display interface transition, and it matters because project managers are already being asked whether to hold equipment orders for the new generation. Amtune's guidance to integrators is to separate the cable question from the device question and to plan in four steps.

Step one is honest measurement. Write down what each room will actually display: resolution, refresh rate, chroma sampling, bit depth and dynamic metadata, not the resolution on the display brochure. Uncompressed 4K at 120Hz at 4:4:4 with 10-bit colour is roughly 40Gbps including overhead, which fits inside HDMI 2.1 but not inside HDMI 2.0. Uncompressed 4K240 and 8K60 with 4:4:4 and 10 or 12 bits need the 96Gbps ceiling and the FRL signalling that carries it. A room that will show 4K60 presentations and video conferencing for another five years needs neither, and buying the newest silicon for it just raises the cost of the forty rooms that have to be fitted this year.

Step two is the cable discipline. The Ultra96 label is a programme, not a promise: it covers cables certified at 64, 80 or 96Gbps, so a certified cable can still be a 64Gbps part, and certification belongs to a specific model and length. Verify the label, the model and the length against the verification record before the cable goes into a wall, and keep the length on the purchase order. Step three is the path through the room. Every element in the chain runs at the speed of its slowest compliant component, and that includes extenders: an HDBaseT link rated for 4K60 4:4:4 at 18Gbps cannot carry a 48Gbps or 96Gbps source at full rate regardless of the cable in front of it. Step four is EDID and HDCP governance, because a matrix feeding mixed displays will negotiate down to the weakest sink unless each output is pinned deliberately.

For estates that need to move before switcher silicon for HDMI 2.2 lands, Amtune recommends keeping the routing layer stable and changing only the endpoints that must change. The current seamless hybrid matrix range covers HDMI 2.0b inputs and scaling across 8x8 to 32x32 configurations, converters handle the mixed HDMI, DVI, VGA and SDI sources that older buildings still present, and multiview processors keep the monitoring layer independent of the display upgrade cycle. When the 96Gbps devices arrive the matrix stays, and the endpoints change. Migration worksheets and a per-room checklist are available from sales@amtune.com.
