8K At 100 Metres Pushes KVM Extension Into HDMI 2.1

AV Access announced the 8KEX100-KVM on 15 October, an HDMI 2.1 KVM extender that carries video and USB control up to 100 metres over a single Cat 6, 6A or 7 cable. The headline numbers are 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 120Hz, HDCP 2.3 support, USB 2.0 for keyboard, mouse and peripherals, RS-232 pass-through, EDID management and power over cable so only one end needs a mains outlet. The company positions it for studios, hospitals, control rooms and simulation, which is another way of saying: anywhere the computer is loud, hot, expensive or not allowed to be touched.

The engineering story is the bandwidth. Uncompressed 8K60 at 4:4:4 sits above 48Gbps, which is the entire HDMI 2.1 fixed-rate link, so a single twisted pair at 100 metres is not carrying that signal raw. Every product in this class therefore makes a choice: a proprietary link layer with light compression, a visually lossless codec, or a reduced chroma and bit-depth mode that the box negotiates silently. Buyers should ask which, because the answer determines whether a colour-critical workflow is safe. It also determines latency, an artefact profile around fine text and gradients, and whether the extender behaves when a display is swapped mid-session. HDCP 2.3 is the other quiet requirement, since 8K premium content will not handshake on older 2.2 silicon.

KVM is having a revival for reasons that have little to do with video. Workstations with multiple GPUs are loud and produce real heat, so they belong in a services room rather than under a desk in a studio or a hospital reading room. Security policy increasingly wants the machine that touches patient data or unreleased media physically separated from the person using it. And servicing a workstation is far easier when it is on a rack shelf at chest height. The catch is that USB is not one thing: a keyboard and mouse are trivial, a USB webcam or audio interface is isochronous and far less forgiving, and USB 3.x storage over 100 metres is a different product category entirely. A KVM extender rated for USB 2.0 will run your keyboard, your licence dongle and a headset; it will not run a 4K capture device.

The design rule that keeps projects out of trouble is to separate the two jobs. Point-to-point extension is the right answer for one workstation to one or two displays, where deterministic latency, no switch configuration and no IP addressing matter more than scale. AV-over-IP is the right answer when the same source must reach many destinations or when the destination set changes weekly. Mixing them on one project is normal, but they need separate switch ports and separate documentation, or the first network loop takes down both. Amtune supplies the surrounding hardware: AV extenders for HDBaseT and category-cable runs, AV converters and signal processors for SDI and HDMI interfacing, seamless hybrid matrix and multi-view processors for control-room routing, and AV-over-IP codecs where scale wins. Every unit ships under an ISO 9001 quality system with CE, FCC and RoHS testing; project drawings at sales@amtune.com.
