Protocol Bridges Move AV Over IP From Islands To Networks

A product category that barely existed three years ago now has a flagship. Lumens has introduced the OIP-N60C, described by the company as its first OIP bridge controller, built for AV-over-IP systems that have to carry more than one streaming format at once. The unit routes NDI, Dante AV, Dante audio and RTSP through a single hybrid routing core, manages Dante and non-Dante devices from one interface, and ships with 32 user-defined preset templates that can be recalled by room purpose, meeting type or seat layout. Lumens is explicit about the commercial model as well: no paid subscription, and integration with third-party control systems rather than a closed app.

The reason this matters is that most real installations stopped being single-protocol years ago. A corporate floor runs Teams or Zoom rooms on one stack, a broadcast or esports element arrives as NDI, a paging and DSP layer is Dante or AES67, and a legacy camera or encoder still speaks RTSP. Each of those islands works. The seam between them is where projects lose days, because the integrator has to write routing logic that translates between discovery models, naming conventions and latency behaviour that were never designed to coexist. A bridge controller does not make the protocols compatible; it gives one place where the incompatibility is configured, documented and monitored instead of being scattered across five vendor tools.

Look at what the specification emphasises and the design intent becomes clear. Presets, not just routes: the unit stores whole scenes so an operator can move a room from all-hands to breakout to recording without touching a matrix. Independent audio and video handling, so Dante audio can be re-routed to a DSP while NDI video keeps running to a confidence monitor. Third-party control support, which matters more than any single codec, because the controller is a routing engine and the touch panel is where the customer actually lives. And no subscription, which is a direct answer to the anxiety buyers now bring to any device that needs a cloud account to keep working.

The engineering caveats are the usual ones, and they decide whether a bridge helps or hurts. Latency now varies by path, so document a worst-case figure and check it against lip-sync on the largest display rather than the test bench. Discovery across subnets needs mDNS reflection or a director-class management layer, otherwise devices simply do not appear. And a single controller in the middle of everything is a single point of failure, so keep a documented fallback route and a local copy of the configuration. Amtune supplies the transport hardware around that control layer: AV-over-IP encoders and decoders, Dante and AES67 audio interfaces, seamless hybrid matrices and AV extenders for the last hundred metres, all built under an ISO 9001 quality system and tested to CE, FCC and RoHS.
